updated Mar. 11, 2010.
Note: The following list falls into two parts; within each part, the needs are presented more or less in the order of priority, though of course we consider all of the needs important!
Potential donors may read more about the Center's mission and projects.
A. Further development
1. Website Development:
Continued development of our web sites, especially the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Christianity (www.bdcconline.net) and the Global China Center site (www.globalchincenter.org). Although the BDCC is receiving greater support from Chinese Christians, we still need funding for our editors and writers. Likewise, the GCC site requires constant attention by our webmaster, our senior associates, and our research associates.
2010
Dr. Yading Li and his wife Dr. Cui’an Peng: $36,000
Dr. G. Wright Doyle and his assistant: $15,000
Dr. Carol Lee Hamrin $2,400
Other writers (mostly in China, some in the West): $5,000
Jason Truell, webmaster: $ 4,000 (2010); $8,000 (2011)
2010 $ 62,400
2011 (estimated): $64,000
Other Publications:
(a) Our editorship of the Wipf & Stock series, Studies in Chinese Christianity, requires funding for editorial and proof-reading work, as well as for publisher’s fees and promotion. We shall need funds especially for the last two volumes of the Salt & Light sub-series and for the first two volumes of the Builders of the Chinese Church sub-series. (More information on this series and its importance upon request.)
Cost: $100,000 for five volumes. 2010 $40,000 2011: $60,000
(b) Typesetting, promotion, for two volumes by Wright Doyle to be published by Wipf & Stock not in the Studies in Chinese Christianity series, but directly related to our outreach to Chinese scholars.
2010-2011
Typesetting: $1,000
Promotion: $3,000
B. Capacity-building
1. Conference attendance:
To build relationships with both Chinese and Western scholars, we need to be able to attend, and make presentations at, conferences in t he West and in Asia. We try to use one of these as a retreat for our workers each year. In January, 2010, assembled the whole team at the annual meeting of the American Society for Church History, where several members of our group presented a panel. Other conferences will take place in North America, Asia, and Europe. These include a Chinese biblical scholars’ colloquium, Beijing, June, 2010. We are hoping that we can present another panel at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Honolulu in 2011. Two of our associates will be living there, so only four of us will have to travel from the mainland.
Cost : $5,000 for 2010; $10,000 for 2011
2. Travel by the Director and others:
To stay in touch with our associates, Wright Doyle must occasionally travel to visit them and see their actual situation. In 2010-2011, trips are needed to Indiana; San Francisco; Boston; Cambridge, England; Taiwan, and S.E. Asia (In the spring of 2010 and 2011, the Director will need to attend China consultations in Asia.)
Cost: 2010 $4,000; 2011 $6,000
3. Full-time worker for research, writing, speaking at conferences, relating to Chinese scholars:
To keep up with the advances in knowledge and the expectations others now place upon us as a major source of information and understanding about China, and about Christianity in the Chinese world, we need to add the services of at least one full-time .
John Barwick expects to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in May, 2010, with a dissertation on outstanding Protestants who contributed to Chinese society in the twentieth century. With his strong background in theology (M. Div, China Evangelical Seminary), his training in Chinese history, his experience in the Chinese church over nearly twenty years, and his keen awareness of contemporary trends in Chinese church and society, John will bring outstanding resources to the research, writing, teaching, and analysis efforts of GCC and CI.
Cost: June - December, 2010: $23,000; January – December, 2011: $46,000
4. Greater presence in Asia:
A six-week visit to Shanghai in the spring of 2010 will be made by Director Wright Doyle and his wife Dori, for strengthening existing relationships with Chinese universities, where our associates have studied, lectured, and met with local scholars. During this time, Dr. Doyle will also visit Hong Kong to confer with leaders of Chung Chi Christian College at Chinese University of Hong Kong and of the Institute of Sino-Christian Studies. Invitations to lecture at two universities in Shanghai have already been received. We are also considering a longer residence in Shanghai by the Doyles in the spring of 2011.
Cost: 2010: $2,000 ; 2011: $6,000
5. Financial accountability:
Hitherto, our small budget has kept us from applying to the Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability, but we now believe membership in this organization is imperative for us. They require a full financial audit, which we have not been able to afford in the past, but we plan to conduct one for 2009 and thereafter.
Cost:
2010: $2,500
; 2011: $2,500
